Anger Management - CALM

CALM™ is a cognitive-behavioral group training program designed to reduce anger, violence, and emotional loss of control among male offenders.

We designed CALM™ to increase men’s knowledge of anger and other emotions, and to teach them skills that will reduce the frequency, intensity, and duration of anger episodes. The program helps lessen aggression and other strong, negative emotions. Its techniques promote lasting change of inappropriate thought and behavior patterns.

CALM™ consists of 24 sessions. They are practical, highly structured, sequential, and designed to be delivered to groups at risk for inappropriate or violent behavior and, in many cases, criminal recidivism.

The program can be delivered in a variety of community and institutional settings.

CALM™ consists of the following modules:

  • Introduction and Motivational Enhancement
  • Managing Arousal
  • Thinking Patterns
  • Assertiveness and Communication
  • Other Emotions
  • Relapse Prevention

Originally developed for Correctional Service Canada, CALM™ has been implemented across the United States, England and Australia. Training in a booster version of the program (CALMER) is also available.
