CALM™ is a cognitive-behavioral group training program designed to reduce anger, violence, and emotional loss of control among male offenders. The popular program is designed to increase men’s knowledge of anger and other emotions and teach the skills necessary to reduce the frequency, intensity, and duration of anger episodes. Originally developed for Correctional Service Canada, CALM has been implemented across the United States, England and Australia. Training in a booster version of the program (CALMER) is also available.
The 24 sessions in the CALM Program teach participants the skills necessary to reduce the frequency, intensity, and duration of anger. This helps to lessen the likelihood of the occurrence of aggression and other strong negative emotions. A variety of techniques promote lasting change of inappropriate thought and behavior patterns. The CALM sessions are practical, highly structured, sequential, and designed to be delivered to groups at risk for inappropriate or violent behavior and, in many cases, criminal recidivism. The program can be delivered in a variety of community and institutional settings.
