Probation and Parole Officer Basic Training

Orbis offers an exciting new curriculum designed for introducing “What Works” as basic training for new recruits in adult and juvenile community supervision settings. The training model focuses on teaching new officers the case planning and intervention skills needed to be successful agents of change. Covering topics that include basic interviewing skills, assessment techniques, case analysis, planning, service implementation, special needs offenders, the curriculum provides a solid introduction to evidence-based practice in the community corrections field.

The basic training program borrows heavily from the successful Effective Case Work curriculum. Both motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral approaches are integrated within the curriculum. The training is designed to teach officers how research based practices can be effectively applied within the day-to-day tasks of community supervision. During the training new recruits have many opportunities to practice the new skills and obtain feedback from trainers. See The Effective Case Work training for additional details on the nature of the material covered in Basic Training.
