The domains of the tool cover legal history, family, school, community and peers, substance abuse, mental health, attitudes, skills (social/cognitive), employment, and use of free time.
The Youth Assessment and Screening Instrument (YASI™) is based on the innovative model for assessment of risk, needs and protective factors that was developed in the State of Washington for juvenile probation. The YASI has been customized for juvenile justice jurisdictions and youth service settings in order to reflect local criminal justice practices and service characteristics. While maintaining the original format, the YASI has considerable flexibility for a number of case planning and outcome prediction purposes. The instrument uses multiple choice response formats as opposed to checklist items - a property which makes the tool ideal for reassessment of various attitudinal and behavioral elements that frequently become targets for change in case work.
Easy to use software for scoring the YASI is available from Orbis Partners. The results of the assessment are printed as a graphic profile to facilitate case planning and sharing of results with other service providers. The software provides for reassessment, tracking of outcomes, and a “point-and-click” case management module that is graphically tied to the YASI assessment results. The YASI software also includes data management functionality for generating statistical information about the client population – providing the ability to profile risk and strengths for various youth sub-populations.
Orbis Partners focuses on providing a range of services for implementation of the YASI, including customization of the tool, training for administration of the YASI and use for case management, implementation planning and support, validation of scoring, and other research services aimed at deriving maximum benefit from the rich database that is developed by YASI users.
This is an innovative and exciting new approach for assessment and case management in juvenile justice and other youth services. The YASI is being used in juvenile probation in the State of New York, juvenile probation in the State of Illinois, juvenile courts services in North Dakota, youth services and delinquency prevention in the State of Illinois (Department of Human Services), some county jurisdictions in the U.S., and in research applications in Canada.
